Whole-Home Standby Generator Installation & Transfer Switches in Western Washington

Standby generator and transfer switch installation in Tacoma

Power outages in Western Washington's storm season can last hours โ€” or days. A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch keeps your lights on, your heat running, and your refrigerator cold without you lifting a finger. Short Stop Electrical LLC installs generator transfer switches and connects portable or standby generators for homes throughout Tacoma and Western Washington.

We handle the electrical side of generator installs: automatic transfer switch (ATS) wiring, manual transfer switch (interlock kit) installation, generator inlet box installation, load calculation to size your circuits, and permit coordination. We work alongside your generator supplier or can recommend local propane/natural gas contractors for fuel hookup.

Our work is permitted, inspected, and done to code โ€” keeping your homeowner's insurance valid and your family safe from backfeed hazards.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a transfer switch and an interlock kit?

A transfer switch dedicates specific circuits (lights, heat, fridge, etc.) to generator power and disconnects them from the utility automatically. An interlock kit is a simpler mechanical device on your main panel that prevents the generator and utility from feeding power simultaneously โ€” it's less expensive but requires more manual intervention. We'll help you choose based on your generator type and budget.

Can I connect my portable generator to my house?

Yes โ€” through a proper generator inlet box and transfer switch or interlock kit. Never connect a generator directly to an outlet (backfeeding) โ€” it's illegal, can damage your generator, and can kill utility lineworkers. We install the right inlet and switching equipment to do this safely and legally.

Does generator installation require a permit in Washington?

Yes. Both the electrical connection and sometimes the generator pad placement require permits in Washington. We handle all permit paperwork and schedule the final inspection.
