Smart Home & Low Voltage Wiring

Smart Home, Data Wiring & Low Voltage Installation Across Western Washington

Structured cabling and low voltage panel installation in Tacoma home

Modern homes run on more than power โ€” they run on data. Short Stop Electrical LLC installs structured cabling, Cat6 network wiring, coax, and smart home device wiring throughout homes in Tacoma and Western Washington. Whether you're setting up a home office network, a whole-home audio system, or smart lighting controls, we handle the wiring cleanly and professionally.

We install Lutron smart dimmer systems, smart switch wiring for voice-controlled lighting, in-wall speaker wire for audio, and Cat6 to every room for fast wired internet โ€” far more reliable than Wi-Fi for home offices, gaming, and 4K streaming. We also wire smart thermostat, doorbell, and security camera systems.

Low-voltage work can be done independently or as part of a larger project. All cabling is properly routed through walls, labeled at both ends, and tested after installation.

Frequently asked questions

Is hardwired Cat6 really better than Wi-Fi?

Yes โ€” significantly. Cat6 ethernet delivers consistent speeds of 1 Gbps with zero interference, congestion, or drop-outs. For home offices with video calls, gaming, 4K streaming, and NAS storage, wired beats wireless every time. We run Cat6 to each room and terminate it at a central patch panel.

Can you install smart switches without a neutral wire?

Many smart switches require a neutral wire in the switch box โ€” something older homes often don't have (they only have hot and switched hot). We can run a neutral to your switch locations to make any smart switch work, or we'll select a compatible no-neutral smart switch for your setup.

Do I need a licensed electrician for low-voltage wiring?

Low-voltage cabling (Cat6, coax, speaker wire) itself doesn't require an electrical license in Washington. However, the power supply for smart devices, in-wall outlets for TVs, and smart switch wiring does. We often combine low-voltage and line-voltage work in a single visit for efficiency.
